Kingstown, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, August 6, 2007 (NEMO) - On Friday 27th July, 2007, The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) was given the opportunity to test its national capabilities and the regional emergency telecommunication network, through the simulation of possible real time scenarios for St. Vincent and the Grenadines during the ‘Exercise Region Rap 2007’.

‘Exercise Region Rap 2007’ was a telecommunication exercise conducted by the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA), members of the Regional Response Mechanism and other Response Partners to test telecommunications procedures, plans and networks of National Disaster Organisations across the Region. The exercise was also designed to test the Regional Emergency Communication Network.
Saint Vincent & the Grenadines role in the region rap exercise was that of an impacted state along with Turks & Caicos and Guyana. The National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) was activated in response to a simulated accident involving two oil tankers off the shores of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and an island wide power outage which affected the telecommunication system. Representatives from the Telecommunication companies of Cable and Wireless and Digicel were present in the National Emergency Operation Centre to coordinate the response to this emergency along with representatives from SOL, Chevron (Texaco), The E. T Joshua Airport, the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Port Authority, Coast Guard, the Immigration Department, the Radio Rainbow League, members of NEMO’s staff and volunteers.

Deputy Director of NEMO and Director of the National Emergency Operations Centre, Ms Michelle Forbes said that the exercise provided the NEOC members with the opportunity to perform their functions through the simulation of possible real time scenarios. Forbes further stated that the feed back and recommendations from the persons who took part in the exercise were good and they will be implemented to improve the effective functioning of the NEOC.
