Disaster awareness training for grade five students at the Marriaqua Government School Saint Vincent

Kingstown, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, September 3, 2007 (NEMO) - Grade five students at the Marriaqua Government School will be introduced to a number of practical exercises in understanding natural hazards and disaster management topics using a newly developed innovation called Disaster Awareness Game (DAG). The Disaster Awareness Game (DAG) was developed by Gunma University, Japan in collaboration with the University of the West Indies, Mona.

The two day workshop is scheduled to take place at the Marriaqua Government School on Tuesday 4th and Wednesday 5th September, 2007 and is organized by the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) in collaboration with the Department of Geography and Geology at the University of the West Indies, Mona Jamaica; the Department of Civil Engineering, Gunma University, Japan and the Ministry of Education. 

This workshop stems from a programme that promotes hazards and disaster awareness among school children in the Caribbean. It introduces children to a number of practical exercises in understanding disaster management topics.

Lecturer, University of the West Indies, Mona Jamaica, Dr. Balfour Spence and PHD Candidate, Virginia Clerveaux, Gunma University, Japan, will be the main facilitators for this workshop.

The workshop will take place from 9:00am to 3:00pm each day.
