City relieved as water supply restored - Saturday's storm in Guyana caused major damage
The city's water supply was disrupted after a storm in Guyana damaged a transformer at the Shelter Belt Water Guyana Power and Light reported damage to transmission and distribution networks in all three counties.

Storm in Guyana brought down house on Alness children
Storm force winds which lashed coastal Guyana on Saturday were of the magnitude of 25-30 metres per second, according to the hydro-met department, and on the Corentyne four children had a narrow escape at Alness.

A vigorous tropical wave, which forecasters previously expected to become a tropical depression, brought strong tropical storm force winds and heavy rains to Guyana ripping off roofs, knocking down power poles, trees and buildings.

IDB funds disaster risk management projects in the Caribbean
The Inter-American Development Bank has announced a US$800,000 grant for a project to improve disaster risk management for the tourist sector in the Caribbean and a US$785,000 grant for climate information applied to agricultural risk management in the Andean countries.

Region secures EU funding for disaster management
The Caribbean Forum for African, Caribbean and Pacific Countries (CARIFORUM) has secured a grant of €3.4 million from the European Commission to support the Region’s disaster preparedness programme. The project will be executed by CDERA.

Italian help for CARICOM early warning system
The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the government of Italy signed a scientific cooperation agreement towards the establishment of an early warning system for disaster management in the Caribbean.

CARICOM to get more disaster management help from Japan
The CARICOM side at the Eleventh Japan-CARICOM consultation held in Tokyo, Japan earlier this month reiterated the importance of environmental protection and natural disaster management and mitigation, and the Japanese delegation confirmed its readiness to continue its support of CARICOMs efforts in this area.
