Recovering from 'Ivan'
Reflecting the resilience of the Jamaican peolpe, the banana industry is set to make its first export shipment this week only six months after Hurrricane Ivan devastated the crop. Bananas, green and ripe, are already back on the local market.

Jamaica: Government to stop using schools as shelters
CITING WIDESPREAD vandalism, the Government has reiterated its intention to stop using schools as shelters during natural disasters. Dean Peart, Minister of Land and Environment, disclosed this during the opening ceremony of a regional workshop on improving response to natural disasters. This is being staged by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA) under the theme 'Beyond 2004 Events'.

Regional conference examines preparedness for national disasters
Last years active hurricane season resulted in excess of US$5 billion in damage to seven Caribbean States. Environmental and emergency response professionals throughout the Caribbean met recently at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, to review the lessons learned at a two day conference jointly organized by UNDP and CDERA.

Caribbean not fully prepared for hurricanes
Assessments carried out in the Caribbean after last year's series of hurricanes have found shortcomings in the disaster preparedness and emergency response efforts by some states that were hard hit during the period that was considered to be the most active in history. This was revealed at the UNDP/ CDERA regional workshop on improving response to natural disasters.

Update on Soufriere Hills Volcano - No cause for alarm
Gas emissions from the Soufriere Hills volcano accompanied by a roaring sound have caused concern to residents. The Government of Montserrat has been informed by scientists from the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) that there is no cause for alarm.
