St. John's Antigua, February 12, 2010 (Antigua Sun) - The Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) will be instituting a water rationing system in an effort to extend the availability of water supplies until there is a significant increase in rainfall.

A company release stated that, “As Antigua and Barbuda enters further into a drought, APUA has seen a depletion of the surface water resources that it relies heavily on.

“At our normal rate of consumption, the Potworks Dam, our largest containment is estimated to have enough water to take the country to the end of February if there is not a significant increase in rainfall. The Dunning’s Dam in Bendals is also estimated to follow this trend.”

The release added that because of this, consumers will be supplied with water at scheduled times throughout the day effective Sunday 14 Feb., 2010.

APUA said the country is divided into nine zones and the schedule of each will be published in local newspapers on a regular basis to guide consumers’ understanding of the rationing schedule.

“As we go through the drought, APUA is urging the general public to conserve water,” the release concluded.
