PAHO hosts workshop on emergency planning for regional hospitals

Bridgetown, Barbados, May 13, 2008 (PAHO) - Heads of hospitals and other senior staff from Anguilla, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, and St.Vincent and the Grenadines are attending a three-day workshop (May 13-15) on Hospital Emergency Planning at the Grand Barbados Hotel. The workshop is organized by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and funded by the European Commission Humanitarian Aid Department.
The objectives of the workshop are to provide hospital staff with the methodology and the outline to develop a contingency plan for Hospitals and for these to be utilized to improve existing hospital contingency plans.
The workshop follows the application of the safe hospital checklist which has been completed in seven hospitals to date.
Case studies will be presented on events in the region which affected hospitals including Hurricanes Dean in Dominica and Ivan in Grenada, bomb threat in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, volcanic eruption in Montserrat and earthquake in Barbados.
The eight hospitals represented at the Workshop are participating in a project to “Strengthen vulnerable communities through safer health facilities in the Caribbean” This project is part of the global campaign for safe hospitals that started this year, spearheaded by ISDR and PAHO.
Participants at the workshop also include representatives from the Community Health Department of the University of the West Indies Jamaica and the St. Georges University Grenada.
