Even as Tropical Storm Beta lurks ominously off the coast of Nicaragua, on Monday Belizeans will mark the 55th anniversary of Hattie, the most catastrophic storm in Belize's history. Over 250 Belizeans across the country died in that storm, and on Monday morning a monument will be unveiled in the Lord's Ridge Cemetery to mark their passing.

The event is spearheaded by George Price who was both Premier and city mayor at that time. He was responsible for a mass burial site for 90 city residents who had died in the storm. They had to be buried like that because of the health risks. The memorial will be erected on the very site of the burial trench which is near the entrance. The unveiling will be accompanied by a memorial service presided over by another storm survivor, Bishop Dorrick Wright who lost his family in Hattie. Those wanting to share in the memorial are invited to attend.
