George Town, Grand Cayman, October 21, 2005 ( National Hurricane Committee)- At 4:00 AM today (Friday, 21 October) Hurricane Wilma was some 317 miles west-northwest of Grand Cayman, continuing to move away and reassuringly, now north of the Islands’ latitude.

However the impact of this powerful hurricane lingers locally, with cloudy skies, widely scattered showers and an additional one inch of rain being forecast for the next 24 hours, together with 20 to 30mph south to southeasterly winds.  Grand Cayman can also expect rough seas of around six to nine feet and battering waves will be experienced on the south and west coasts.

The National Meteorological Service indicates that these weather conditions will continue into the weekend.

On Grand Cayman’s roads, conditions have shown improvement overnight and while delays are still expected, commuters from all districts are now able to travel into George Town.

Eastern district commuters are advised that the flow of water across the road in Savannah has now abated so that drivers from all areas east will now find the road passable. They are however advised to exercise caution.

The West Bay Road detour through Governor’s Harbour continues at this time, in order to complete the removal of debris in the closed-off area.

Meanwhile, in George Town, the Harbour Drive and North Church Street closures also remain in effect and motorists should continue to select alternate routes.

The situation regarding schools and travel on Grand Cayman remains the same.  All government schools, including the University College, are closed today (Friday, 21 October).  Private School interests should contact respective schools for information. Schools on the Sister Islands continue regular classes.

Government offices and private sector offices have mostly resumed regular hours and employees are urged to make every effort to be as responsible as possible in honouring their work obligations. Employers should however be mindful that with schools being closed, there will be additional strain on employees to meet their dual responsibilities as parents and employees.
