The European Union  has released a grant of 9.3 Million Euros or just under EC 33 Million Dollars to assist in the  rehabilitation of schools in Grenada, due to the devastation of Hurricanes Ivan and Emily.

Sixteen schools on the island are to benefit from this grant, which will go towards rehabilitation of classrooms, upgrades to laboratories, general refurbishment and construction of new classrooms, in some instances.

Already Government has expended over 37 Million EC dollars in carrying out some of the rehabilitation work.

At a meeting this morning between Government and E.U. officials, Minister for Education Hon. Claris Charles said that the grant will go a long way towards helping the nation’s schools. The Minister noted that Government has been making serious efforts toward securing funding for the on-going reconstruction process.

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell stressed the importance for the funds to be utilized properly thereby creating an avenue for the Government to access more funding.

He said more funding could become available once the projects are completed in a timely basis.
