On Wednesday 5th December at 8:11am local time, an aftershock following the 29/11/07 earthquake which occurred north of Martinique was felt in Saint Lucia, Dominica and St. Vincent. The preliminary location of the event is 15.11°N 61.05°W with a depth of 128km and magnitude of 5.3. A map of the event can be found here.
Please be advised that aftershock sequences have a general pattern of behavior and certain magnitudes normally associated with earthquakes of the size of the 29/11/07 event (magnitude 7.3) have not yet occurred (e.g. we have not yet had an aftershock in the magnitude range of 6.1-6.5). Scientists expect that these larger aftershocks will probably occur at some time in the future. As such, citizens should familiarize themselves with earthquake safety tips and practice these regularly through drills at home, school and work.

Neither the seismeic research unit nor the Department of Emergency Management have issued any statements regarding earthquake or tsunami watches/warnings for Barbados or any other Caribbean State.
Persons are being asked to report any felt events to any of the agencies referred to above and they should continue too take the necessary preparedness actions too ensure safety of life and property in the event of a felt aftershock or earthquake.
