Bassetterre, September 29 2005(Sun St. Kitts/Nevis)-The Nevis Disaster Management Office, in the Premier’s Ministry, will be staging a week of activities from 1-8 Oct.

“Disaster Awareness Week” will seek to point out recent lessons which should have been learned from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. It will also use 2004 Hurricane Ivan experience in the Caribbean to reinforce the urgency for all to be prepared for any eventuality.

An official release from the Director of the Nevis Disaster Management Office Lester Blackett said it is acknowledged that the susceptibility of the Caribbean region to various hazards, result in very negative impacts to our economic, physical and social infrastructure when tested by disastrous events.

“The planning of this inaugural ‘Disaster Awareness Week’ allows the general public, ministries, departments, agencies, non-government organisations and community entities to examine their hazard preparedness levels and plans,” the release stated.

Key disaster management activities for the week will include a panel discussion, “Let’s Talk” programme, community clean-up day and an exhibition, featuring products and displays from different agencies.

The theme for the week is “Plan now! Don’t wait! Disasters don’t discriminate”.
