FIRSTCARIBBEAN/CDERA disaster management scholarship pays off
Roché Mahon, one of the first recipients of the joint FirstCaribbean International Bank / Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency Disaster Management Scholarship, has joined CDERA’s staff after successfully completing graduate studies in Planning and Development.

Representatives from the Public, Private and Financial Sectors were given the opportunity to gain first hand knowledge in developing Disaster Plans for their Organizations during three Emergency/Disaster Planning Workshops held on the 26th, 27th and 28th March, 2008.

BVI Department of Disaster Management launches summer programme
The Department of Disaster Management is launching its first summer programme. The Summer Exploration Programme is designed to offer a wealth of education in the area of disaster preparedness. As a part of the programme students will learn VHF and HF radio operations, arts and crafts, video and audio capture and editing and hazard safety.

DDM Focus programe hits the World Wide Web
The Department of Disaster Management is informing the public that their monthly Focus programme can now be viewed on the World Wide Web at www.bviwebtv.com. Focus is a programme that is designed to educate and inform the community on all aspects of disaster management and public safety.

Active 2008 Hurricane season expected says Colorado State University team
The Colorado State University team of forecasters led by Phillip Klotzbach has issued updated predictions for the 2008 Atlantic Hurricane Season. “Information obtained through March 2008 indicates that the 2008 Atlantic Hurricane Season will be much more active than the average 1950-2000 season; we estimate 15 named storms, 8 hurricanes, and 4 intense hurricanes of category 3, 4, or 5.” says Mr. Klotzbach.

Radio operators participate in tri-island emergency communications exercise - OPERATION ‘X’ 2008
The tri-island radio communications simulation exercise dubbed “Operation X” will involve St Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia and Grenada in the exchange of emergency communications in a 2 day field exercise.
