Tortola, July 6th, 2007 (DDM) – Another siren has been installed by the Department of Disaster Management. This installation works were completed yesterday in The Valley, Virgin Gorda.  The unit is expected to be heard by residents living in and around this location. This is the sixth siren to be installed throughout the Territory, capable of providing outdoor warning signals to vulnerable communities. The installation of the unit in The Valley was completed with the support of the BVI Electricity Corporation and is now part of a Territory wide Early Warning System Network.

The exact coverage area of the signal from this new unit will be determined during the next scheduled monthly test which is expected to be carried out on 27th June at 2pm. Other siren units are located at Cane Garden Bay, Russell Hill Road Town, East End Long Look, Jost Van Dyke and the Settlement Anegada. Additional sirens will be installed in other locations in the coming year once funding becomes available.

The purpose of the Siren Network is to alert persons outside that there is pending danger.  Upon hearing the siren, outside of normal testing times, which is conducted every 4th Friday at 2:00pm, persons should tune into ZBVI, ZCCR, ZKING, or ZROD for emergency information from the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC). The siren network is linked the National Emergency Broadcast System, which allows the NEOC to interrupt those stations and simultaneously broadcast emergency information.
