Bridgetown, Barbados December 11, 2007 (CDERA) - At 5:00 p.m. DT the centre of Subtropical Storm Olga was located inland over the Dominican Republic near Latitude 18.5 north and Longitude 68.8 west or about 70 miles east of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. Maximum sustained winds are near 45 MPH with higher gusts. Slow weakening is forecasted over the next 24 hours. Sustained minimum pressure is 1003 mb.
A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect along the northern coast of Hispanolia from Cabo Engano in the Dominican Republic to Le Mole St. Nicholas, Haiti.
A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for the Southeastern Bahamas and the Turks & Caicos Islands.
A Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for the Southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic from Cabo Engano to Punta Palenque.
The Prognosis: Olga is moving towards the west near 13 MPH and this general motion is expected to continue for the next 24 hours. Winds of 40 MPH extend outward up to 240 miles mainly to the northeast and northwest of the centre. This motion should take the centre of Olga over the length of the island of Hispaniola and cause it to weaken severely before reaching the Bahamas, Jamaica and the Turks & Caicos Islands.
PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES BY THE NATIONAL DISASTER OFFICES (NDO):
The Bahamas: The NDO has advised a Tropical Storm Warning has been issued and as a result placed the National Response Mechanism on STANDBY.
Turks & Caicos Islands: In response to the tropical storm warning issued, the NDO has placed their National Response Mechanism on STANDBY.
Jamaica: The NDO has been monitoring the progress of Olga and have notified the local disaster management mechanism. All national response mechanisms have been placed on STANDBY including the shelters managers.
Advisories have been issued to the public outlining the critical preparatory actions in the event that TS Olga impacts Jamaica. Regional Response:
