St. George's Grenada, June 6, 2007 (NaDMA) - Blood dripped from one of his fingers as Roderick Noel raced up, clamoring for attention, at the open house in the Grenville Car Park organized by the National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA).

Minutes earlier, Noel, from Plaisant, St. Andrew’s claimed to have accidentally sliced his right thumb while sharpening a cutlass at a meat stall a short distance away.

Red Cross and health workers quickly teamed up to tend to his deep cut, and within minutes the young man, with a painful grin on his face, walked away from the Grenville Car Park.

He was referred to the Princes Alice Hospital.

The scene, which unfolded at the Open House, was no simulation exercise but actually happened and health officials on hand were prepared to respond.

“This is a real live situation we are witnessing” said, NaDMA Coordinator Sylvan McIntyre, one of the officials who witnessed the event.

The open house in Grenville was part of activities marking NaDMA’s Disaster Awareness week being observed from June 1st to the 8th.

The theme for the week is engaging our communities-impacting our nation.

Disaster Management tools from NaDMA were on display as well as from the Ministry of Health and the Red Cross.

The Red Cross display included plastic bags to store water, first aids kits, and tarpaulins.

The booth from Ministry of health featured among other things, information on various ailments such as diabetes, hypertension, while NaDMA booth focused on various communication equipment as well as tools used in search and rescue.

Two persons – Kathlyn  Charles Carriere, St. Andrew’s,  and Betty Ann Noel, Mt, Horne Andrew’s- won first aid kits raffled by the Red Cross to all persons who visited the open house.

A second open house is planned for this Friday at Andall’s lot on the Esplanade.
