Kingston (Jamaica) October 10, 2006 (ODPEM) - The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) will be commemorating the International Day for Disaster Reduction under the theme “Disaster Risk Reduction begins at Schools”, on Wednesday, October 11, 2006. The theme highlights the need to keep our children safe in the face of natural disasters, and to involve them directly in our efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness.

The day’s activities will include an Outside Radio Broadcast at the ODPEM Office, from 9am – 12 noon, as well as interactive site visits to St. Georges College and the Amy Bailey Basic School in the corporate area. The main purpose of the visits is to impart practical behavioural guidelines that students can consistently follow to minimize injury and loss of life in the event that a natural disaster strikes while at school.

Over the last decade, natural disasters have affected more than 2.4 billion people, the majority of them being from developing countries such as Jamaica. Years of development gains have been lost, leaving persons even more exposed to future natural hazards. It is therefore imperative that, as a country, we accelerate our efforts to reduce our vulnerability.
