The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) is advising the public that the Meteorological Service has placed the country under tropical storm watch as a result of hurricane Felix that is presently south of Jamaica and moving towards the west. Despite the fact that Hurricane Felix is NOT a direct threat to Jamaica at this time, the ODPEM implores the public to remain in a state of readiness until the watch is lifted.
In its journey south of the island, hurricane Felix may influence weather conditions in Jamaica by early Monday, with sections of the island experiencing tropical storm wind gusts and rainfall associated with the outer bands of the system.
The public is therefore reminded to:
Stay tuned to the news and weather reports and listen out for emergency instructions, if any should be given.
Be ready for quick action if flooding is observed or if a warning is issued from either the Meteorological Service or ODPEM.
Exercise caution when using bridges, fording and passes that are near to rivers and streams that are already in spate.
Do not drive through water-filled gullies.
Avoid areas that are at risk from flooding and landslides.
The Met Office and the ODPEM are closely monitoring the situation and will provide further updates as the situation demands.
