Kingston, Jamaica August 27, 2008 (ODPEM) -  The Jamaica Meterological  Service has advised the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) today, August 27, 2008,  that a Tropical Storm Warning and a Hurricane Watch remain in effect for Jamaica, as Tropical Storm Gustav resumes a track closer to the island. This means that hurricane conditions still pose a possible threat while tropical storm conditions are expected to affect Jamaica in 24 hours or less.

Gustav has slowed significantly overnight, resulting in a delay in the projected time that the island will begin to experience its effects. T.S. Gustav’s outer bands could start to bring scattered showers and gusty winds today; the heavy rainfall and strong winds projected to spread across the island should now be expected later tonight.

To this extent the ODPEM has delayed the full activation of its National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) until 9:00 a.m. today, Wednesday August 27.

The public however, is advised to continue monitoring radios and televisions for further advisories and to avoid areas that are at risk from flooding and landslides. Also take the following precautions in the event of heavy rains:

1. Avoid flooded waterways, gullies, streams or rivers, either on foot or in vehicles.

2. Be ready to evacuate if you live in low-lying or flood-prone areas.

3. Decide on likely evacuation routes now. Plan to stay with family or friends in safer areas or in a public shelter and move to safety.

4. Wrap important personal items, family documents, and electrical appliances in plastic bags and store away from the reach of floodwaters.

5. Fishers and other marine interests, including fishers on the cays and banks, should by now be arriving in port to start preparations for safe harbour.

The progress of T.S. Gustav will continue to be closely monitored by the Meteorological Service of Jamaica and the ODPEM and updates will be released to the public as soon as new information has been gathered.
