Montserrat, June 27, 2006 (Emergency Policy Group)- Scientists at the Montserrat Volcano Observatory have reported that the situation at the Soufriere Hills Volcano remains unchanged today. The alert level remains at level four.

The MVO have reported that the heightened seismic activity, with an ongoing swarm of volcanic earthquakes, increases the possibility of serious eruptive events that could affect some inhabited areas.

The MVO has also reiterated that such activity could possibly lead to dome collapse or explosive events and it is for this reason that the alert level has been increased.

The Authorities have announced that the Day Time Entry Zone (which is St, George’s Hill), remains closed until further notice. This means that there should be no entry to this area at all until further notice. Anyone entering points south of the Belham Valley, other than Iles Bay Hill, should, for their own safety and as a precaution, register at the Salem Police Station before crossing the Belham Valley.

Residents on Iles Bay Hill are reminded that they should not attempt to cross the Belham Valley during heavy rainfall or increased volcanic activity. Please note that heavy rain has been forecast for the tomorrow (Wednesday) onwards.

Residents of Salem are advised that there is no change in risk levels in this area. This level is currently Low on the Chief Medical Officer’s Scale.
Depending on the visibility, a further assessment of the situation will be conducted by the MVO using helicopter.

Her Excellency the Governor and the Honourable Chief Minister will meet with the Emergency Policy Group, Wednesday when the situation would be further reviewed.
