Brades, Montserrat, July 29, 2008 (DMCA) – Scientists at the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) reported that a partial collapse of the dome at 11:30pm on Monday July 28, 2008 sent pyroclastic flows down Plymouth and into the sea on the western side of the volcano.

Small explosions sent ash several thousands of feet into the air. The episode lasted between 45 minutes and one hour.

The activity is presently at background level, but because of the unstable nature of the dome. His Excellency, the Acting Governor Professor Sir Howard Fergus and the Honourable Chief Minister Dr. Lowell Lewis issued a joint statement on the event and have advised the evacuation of areas from Isles Bay Hill, Belham, Water Works, Happy Hill, Lower Friths, and parts of Old Towne south of Loblolly Lane.

Residents in close proximity to these areas are also advised to move further north if they feel uncomfortable.

Residents who have already moved northwards are advised to stay out of the vulnerable areas until the situation is further assessed in a few hours.

The Disaster Management Coordination Agency (DMCA) is making arrangements to accommodate evacuees for the next few hours pending further advice at the following:-

• The Brades Arts and Education Centre
• The Public Market in Little Bay
• The Cultural Centre also in Little Bay

A further statement would be made following an emergency meeting of the National Disaster Preparedness and Response Advisory Committee (NDPRAC) scheduled for later today.
