Name change for Montserrat national disaster office

The Disaster Management Office in Montserrat has a new name.

Once referred to as the Emergency Department, the disaster office is now called the Disaster Management Coordination Agency (DMCA).

The name change was effected in Executive Council recently.

The former name – Emergency Department – created a perception in the public locally, regionally and internationally where the department was linked to the emergency services at the St. John’s hospital, rather than with Comprehensive Disaster Management.

The new name more aptly represents the role of the organization as the lead agency for coordination of emergency and disaster response activities on Montserrat.

The DMCA’s purpose is to provide comprehensive disaster preparedness and mitigation, response, and recovery programmes for the citizens of Montserrat, in order to save lives, prevent injuries, protect property, and preserve the environment during major emergencies and disasters.

This agency is in charge of coordinating all local emergency agencies in performing well-defined roles in the larger context of the multi-agency response to disasters.
