BVI Department of Disaster Management launches summer programme
The Department of Disaster Management is launching its first summer programme. The Summer Exploration Programme is designed to offer a wealth of education in the area of disaster preparedness. As a part of the programme students will learn VHF and HF radio operations, arts and crafts, video and audio capture and editing and hazard safety.

The Department of Disaster Management is informing the public that their monthly Focus programme can now be viewed on the World Wide Web at www.bviwebtv.com. Focus is a programme that is designed to educate and inform the community on all aspects of disaster management and public safety.

Active 2008 Hurricane season expected says Colorado State University team
The Colorado State University team of forecasters led by Phillip Klotzbach has issued updated predictions for the 2008 Atlantic Hurricane Season. “Information obtained through March 2008 indicates that the 2008 Atlantic Hurricane Season will be much more active than the average 1950-2000 season; we estimate 15 named storms, 8 hurricanes, and 4 intense hurricanes of category 3, 4, or 5.” says Mr. Klotzbach.

Geologists hunt for ancient tsunamis in the BVI
A team of US research geologists spent the last two weeks in the Territory conducting an initial paleoseismic study of Anegada. Dr. Brian Atwater with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and Dr. Martitia Tuttle with M. Tuttle & Associates were trying to determine if the Puerto Rico Trench can produce magnitude 9 earthquakes and trans-Atlantic tsunamis.

Dangerous sea conditions now affecting BVI waters
Dangerous swells have been affecting the north side shores of the BVI. Breaking wave heights along the outer reefs and shoals of the local Atlantic coastlines are building to 20 feet and will peak at 20 to 25 feet late Wednesday through Thursday.

Dangerous sea conditions to affect the BVI waters
A cold front moving across the local area (BVI)is producing scattered showers and gusty winds. This system is generating very large swells which should reach the local waters by this evening.

DDM completes siren installation in the Valley, Virgin Gorda
Another siren has been installed by the Department of Disaster Management. This installation works were completed yesterday in The Valley, Virgin Gorda. The unit is expected to be heard by residents living in and around this location. This is the sixth siren to be installed throughout the Territory, capable of providing outdoor warning signals to vulnerable communities. The installation of the unit in The Valley was completed with the support of the BVI Electricity Corporation and is now part of a Territory wide Early Warning System Network.

Tsunami Workshop held in Trinidad & Tobago
A tsunami warning and seismology training workshop organized by the University of the West Indies (UWI) Seismic Research Unit was held last week at the St. Augustine UWI campus. The 5-day workshop was designed to provide participants with an understanding of the science behind tsunami warnings and operational best practices of warning centers.
