NEMO held first Whistle Stop & Exhibition for 2007

Kingstown, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, May 23, 2007 (NEMO) - The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) kicked off its first Whistle Stop and Exhibition in Chateaubelair on Tuesday 22nd May 2007. The Whistle Stop and Exhibition forms part of NEMO’s Awareness activities for the 2007 Hurricane Season.
The Whistle Stop started at 10 am from NEMO’s Headquarters in Old Montrose and traveled through the Leeward course of the country to Chateaubelair. Stops were made at Campden Park, Questelles, Vermont, Penniston, Buccament, Layou, Peters Hope, Barrouallie, Spring Village, Troumaca, Rose Hall, Rose Bank and the Chateaubelair Playing Field where the exhibition took place.
Family Emergency Plans, and other information such as landslides, storm surge, coastal erosion, floods, tropical cyclones, safer building in the Caribbean, preparedness for animals were distributed as the caravan drove through the villages and at all the stops. Persons were also given the opportunity to win prizes for correct answers given in the disaster preparedness quiz.
The exhibition was well attended by residents of Chateaubelair and the surrounding areas, members of the Chateabelair, Troumaca and Fitz Hughes District Disaster Committee and the Chateaubelair Red Cross Group. Students from the Troumaca Ontario Secondary School, the Fitz Hughes Government School and the Chateaubealir Methodist School visited the exhibition.
The exhibition was organized by NEMO in collaboration with the Solid Waste Management Unit and the Forestry Department.
The hurricane awareness activities are part of NEMO’s Public Awareness and Education Programme and efforts to heighten awareness of natural hazards and to prepare the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines to face the 2007 hurricane season. The next activity will take place on Friday 25th May in the form of a Whistle Stop for Kingstown and the surrounding areas.
The 2007 hurricane season officially starts on 1st June, and ends on the 30th November 2007.
