The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) has been advised by the Meteorological Service that a Flash Flood Warning is in effect for low-lying and flood prone areas of Hanover, St. James, Trelawny, St. Ann, St. Mary and Portland until 5:00 a.m. tomorrow.
Motorists and pedestrians in these parishes are therefore being advised to exercise caution especially when crossing flooded roadways and gullies and fords. Residents in low-lying areas should also be on the alert for rising waters and be ready to move quickly to higher ground.
As a result of the heavy rains experienced, the ODPEM has received the following reports in St. Mary and St. Ann.
St. Mary
Flooding has been reported in the following areas:
- Sunnyside Bridge
- A temporary bridge linking Port Maria to Highgate in the vicinity of Heywood Hall has been washed away. The alternative route to Highgate is through Islington. However, work is currently being carried out on the bridge by the National Works Agency (NWA).
- Flooding has also occurred in sections of the main road leading from Brown’s Town to Runaway Bay.
- Two cars have been reported washed away in the vicinity of Esler Gully and Bellfield Works in the parish.
St. Ann
- Several houses have also been reported flooded in Wharf Street, St. Ann’s Bay.
