Heavy showers and thundershowers will continue to cause flooding today.  This situation, according to the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service in its Bulletin No I issued at 8:00 a.m. today, will result in some of the river basins cresting and spilling its banks.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) has been actively co-ordinating requests from persons seeking assistance.

First Responders, in Trinidad and Tobago, have been fully mobilized. All Regional Corporations and the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service are prepared and are responding to calls for assistance from areas that are flooded or need to be evacuated because of life threatening situations.

The Chief Executive Officer, Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) Mr. Paul H Saunders has sought the assistance of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (Coast Guard and Regiment) and the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service to address potential situations that may arise from the expected flooding situation.

The Met Service in its 8:00 a.m. advisory indicated that some rivers, including the Caroni River could crest and overspill its banks thereby causing flooding in low lying areas.

The ODPM has confirmed with the Water Resource Authority that this situation is very possible.  The ODPM will monitor this situation and has put the necessary measures in place for this possible impact.

In the interim, and based on several reports of flooding and potential flooding, the ODPM wishes to advise the public of the following immediate measures that have been in place:

For Residents:
Residents, especially along the Caroni River basin and environs are asked to take the necessary precautions for flooding.   Remember to be community conscious and check with your immediate neighbours to ensure that they are aware of the situation.

For Motorists:
The driving public is asked to proceed with caution.  The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service have been alerted to potential flooding along the roads and highways and will assist with traffic control.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management will continue to co-ordinate requests for rapid response to affected persons.
