Flood update- Guyana
The National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) report issued January, 17, stated that there are reports of flooding in Regions 2,3,4,5 and 6 as well as reports of high waters in some areas in Region Four.Government of Guyana continues to monitor the flood situation around the country and oversee relief efforts.

The dry weather of the last five days has eased the efforts to reduce the level of the floods in Guyana, and many families have been able to start cleaning up their homes. The cleanup of public buildings is also ongoing, but it will take time and resources for the affected populations to be able to recover adequate living and working conditions.

Today, the United Nations launched a Flash Appeal in Georgetown to cover the emergency and transitional response to the flood disaster in Guyana. The activities will address the humanitarian and community recovery needs identified in close collaboration with the Government and aid partners in Guyana.

USAID Situtation Report No. 2 - Guyana - Floods
Between January 18 and February 1, 2005, USAID/OFDA staff, including two Regional Advisors, a USAID/OFDA Consultant, and a USAID/OFDA Communications Officer, deployed to Guyana to assess emergency needs and coordinate USG relief efforts.

OCHA Situation Report No. 6 - Guyana - Floods
Tomorrow, Dr. Roger Luncheon, Head of the Presidential Secretariat, and Mr. Youssef Mahmoud, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Guyana, will launch a United Nations Flash Appeal in Georgetown to assist flood victims. Dry weather is expected in Guyana according to the 5-day weather prognosis. The authorities estimate that it will take 10 to 14 days to remove the floodwater from the land in the affected areas, except Mahaica Creek area where it could take 2-3 weeks before the waters recede.
