The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has provided the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA) a grant in the amount of US$800,000 in support of the Regional Disaster Risk Management for Sustainable Tourism in the Caribbean Project. The project is being implemented by CDERA in collaboration with its partners, the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), the CARICOM Regional Organization for Standards and Quality (CROSQ), and the University of the West Indies (UWI). The project is developing, and supporting the adoption of, a Regional Public Good that is a regional disaster risk management framework for the tourism sector in the Caribbean. This will contribute to the overall goal of reducing the vulnerability of the Caribbean’s economically vital tourism sector to natural hazards. Specifically, the IDB grant is financing the development of a Regional Disaster Risk Management Strategy for Sustainable Tourism including the formulation of Standards for Vulnerability and Risk Assessments applied to the tourism sector. It is also funding institutional strengthening of CDERA, the CTO, and other stakeholders in disaster risk management for sustainable tourism.
Under the project, a two (2) day workshop will be held at the Trinidad & Tobago Bureau of Standards Auditorium, Macoya, Tunupuna on May 5-6, 2009. Key project beneficiaries, including the National Disaster Offices, the National Tourism Organizations, and the Regional Bureaus of Standards, are invited to attend, along with relevant tourism-related entities in the Caribbean.
The workshop is expected to provide: (i) an opportunity for regional consensus-building on the development of the Tourism Disaster Risk Management Strategy and Standards for Risk Assessment; (ii) capacity strengthening for National Tourism Organizations (CTO members) and National Disaster Offices (CDERA members) in Disaster Risk Management for the tourism sector; (iii) information on stakeholder benefits from the project; (iv) an overview of the project’s purpose and objectives; and (v) a status of the project since its inception.
Additional information is available from the Project Coordinator, Ms. Patricia Maughan at the CDERA-based Executing Unit at 1-246-425-0386 or patricia.maughan@cdera.org.
