The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA) will conduct a two-day workshop in Port of Spain, Trinidad on August 13 and 14, 2009 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.
Entitled “ICT and Disaster Management – The Role of Applied Research”, the workshop is the culmination of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) funded project - “Enhancing the Effectiveness of Information and Communication Technology Applications in Disaster Management”.
The seminar will convene with over thirty (30) representatives from a cross section of regional disaster organizations and other stakeholders and generate ideas for the optimized use of ICT in disaster management policy. It will also serve as a forum for the presentation of studies effected during the course of the IDRC project.
Discussions will revolve around the use of ICTs in a plethora of situations researched over the last year, including;
- GIS for early warning systems,
- e-messaging and real time communications,
- ICT applications in damage assessments,
- the introduction of PACTOR – an ICT tool which merges web based and radio communication technologies - in disaster management, as well as;
- an update of one of CDERA’s more recent ICT resource investments, a web enabled crisis information management system called WebEOC.
The exercise will reinforce the primary aims of the “Enhancing the Effectiveness of Information and Communication Technology Applications in Disaster Management” Project which are to;
- identify and assess the effectiveness ICT tools in national notification protocols for fast onset hazards in the Caribbean, and;
- analyze the role of ICTs in strengthening community knowledge and support in the collection of post event information for earthquakes in the Eastern Caribbean.
