The Institutional Support and Capacity Building for Disaster Management in the Caribbean (EDF) Project has convened a meeting of regional disaster representatives in the field of Public Awareness and Education at the CDEMA CU, Manor Lodge Complex, St Michael, Barbados on Thursday February 25, 2010.
The Model Public and Policy Awareness Communications Workshop is facilitated by Greg Hoyos and Associates Inc. regional experts with international experience in the field of marketing. The workshop will develop strategies to:
- Alter the low levels of public awareness of risks, vulnerabilities and possibilities for disaster reduction allow,
- Engage members of the public in risk reduction activities which presents a challenge at present;
In doing so past and current disaster-related awareness campaigns will be assessed with a view to changing the existing reactive responses to proactive disaster risk reduction activities; CDEMA’s has, through the activities of this consultancy - Development and Adaptation of Model Public Education/Awareness Policy and Strategy, the EDF and other projects sought to embed the concept of Comprehensive Disaster Management for risk reduction and sustainable development at all levels; including the policy makers and national level stakeholders, civil society, businesses and employers and the general public;
Under the auspices of the EDF Project and the Development and Adaptation of Model Public Education/Awareness Policy and Strategy there will be more focused disaster awareness development efforts targeting school administrators, the youth population and vulnerable segments of national societies which are only at the embryonic stages.
Background: The EDF project, called the Institutional Support and Capacity Building for Disaster Management in the Caribbean Project is a €3 million (about US$ 5 million) program funded by the European Commission (EC) and implemented by the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency, CDEMA (formerly CDERA). The project is in its second year of implementation and is aimed at increasing the Agency’s capability to coordinate and lead disaster management in the region. The project spans all 18 CDEMA participating states and is scheduled to end in December 2010. Projects being administered by the fund address – disaster management legislation, disaster related research, public awareness and education on disaster preparedness and education, Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) and increasing their applications in disasters and internal restructuring and strengthening of CDEMA’s Coordinating Unit.
